come together as a strong and proud family. It is the intent of this website to hopefully enlighten and bring together those Sierra family members of generations to come. A brief history of the Sierra Family Manuel Sierra Reyes traveled to and settled in Cuba from Spain around the beginning of the 19th century (approximately 1820). He married Candida Jomarron soon after. In additition to his son Juan, they had two daughters. When the independence war for the liberation of Cuba from Spain, Juan Sierra Jomarron, Don Manuel's son, decided to join the rebels (mambises as they called themselves, meaning"from the land"). He (Juan) rose to Captain of the Liberating Forces. Don Manuel, being a Spaniard, decided to return to Spain with their two daughers so he would not not be forced to fight against his own son.Juan Sierra Jomarron, the eldest son of Manuel Sierra Reyes, was born in Cuba on 1826. He was a Captain of the Liberating Forces, under General Marrero. After the war, he settled in the region of Puerto Sama and Jaguajay, near the town of Banes, in the Oriente Province at the eastern end of the island. Papacito, as he was called by his grandchildren, married Margarita Garcia Dieguez in Auras, a region in the municipality of Holguin. They had twelve children. The oldest, Manuel, died at an early age and was not married. This was the second generation of Cuban borned Sierras. |
